World AIDS Week Movie In-Person
Rogers Free Library, along with the Rhode Island Consumer Advisory Board, JSI., and the Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services invite the public to a viewing of the movie Philidelphia (1993) and open discussion in honor of World AIDS Week RI.

This legal drama tells the story of an attorney who sues his former law firm for firing him after discovering he is gay and has AIDS. This film stars Tom Hanks as Andrew Beckett, and Denzel Washington as his lawyer, Joe Miller. This is one of the first mainstream films to excplicitly address HIV/AIDS and to portray gay people in a positive light. Tom Hanks won an Oscar for his performance, as did the movie's song, "Streets of Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen.
